Midweek Metropolitan Pennant Grand Finals
They came with dozens of supporters dressed in bee headgear, colours and costume. And Werribee’s bowlers didn’t forget to bring the sting either, securing a popular 2017-18 Taylor Bowls Midweek Premier Division flag victory over Clayton.
The team known as the Bees swarmed the host venue Yarraville-Footscray, both on and off the green, playing great bowls to see off minor premiers Clayton 75-55 in the grand final.
It was an emphatic victory across all three rinks – Werribee’s Trish Forder seeing off Canadian international Kelly McKerihen 27-16, Judy Brown beating Desiree Macaulay 22-21 and Lyn Milledge downing Faye Clarke 26-18.
While Clayton started well, control was established within the first 15 ends of the scheduled 63 for Werribee. They took a two-shot lead at that point as Forder clawed back a hot start from McKerihen.
The pedal went down after lunch – Werribee going from a 29-20 lead ahead of feeding time to a 24-shot lead 42 ends in.
Werribee held a big lead towards the death, and didn’t play the final two ends after their lead couldn’t be assailed.
For Clayton, it was a second successive loss in the midweek decider after Glenroy beat them in 2016-17. Clayton had only lost two matches all season this time around – including the preliminary final two weeks earlier to Werribee.
Clayton had better luck in the Division Two grand final played on the adjoining green, beating Keilor 64-52.
