Staff Departures
As a result of a review of the internal staffing structure of Bowls Victoria a decision was made to streamline certain operations within Bowls Victoria. As a result of this restructure we sadly have to announce that two positions were made redundant. Jenny Gilbert (Accounts & Membership Officer) and Natalie Vernon (Reception and Administration Assistant) have both done some great work for Bowls Victoria and will be missed but we thank them for their efforts and wish them well in the future.
Any queries regarding Membership can be directed to Amanda James on amanda@bowlsvic.org.au or to Finance Manager, Georgina Hodson, on georginah@bowlsvic.org.au or ring the Bowls Victoria offices on (03) 9861 7100

Under 18 Test Series vs South Australia
Last weekend an Under 18 Test Series involving Bowls Victoria & Bowls South Australia was staged at Moonee Ponds BC. In the first test the newer look Victorian girls side led by captain Tayla Morrison (Melbourne) , Tiffany Brodie (Fitzroy Victoria), Amelia Bruggy (Bendigo), Mikayla Long (Glenroy), Natasha Russell (Clayton) recorded wins in three out of the four disciplines with the only blemish a loss in the pairs to their Bowls SA counterparts 13-16. Enough was done in the other three events to secure a 3-1 win. The Victorian boys’ team under captain Joshua Corless (Bundoora), Jayden Christie (Werribee), Curtis Handley (Clayton), Alex Skilton (Clayton), and Jordan Yates (Glenroy) got off to a flyer and recorded four wins from the four events played even though the win in the singles by was by a slender one shot margin 21-20. At the end of Day One both teams had laid a solid foundation for the remainder of the weekend by winning the all-important first test. Click here to view all of the details of what happened on Days 2 & 3 and how the Victorians secured their overall wins in the event. For all the information relating to who has made it into the Gold and Silver Squads for the Under 18’s for the coming season’s activities click here. It’s from these squads that representative teams will be selected for test series in 2015/16.

Inaugural Lawn Bowls challenge for Primary Schools at Sorrento
Sorrento Primary School took out both the winner’s and the runner’s-up trophies:
The winners: were a Year 5 team called “John’s Jaguars” (inspired by Sorrento Bowls Club member John Shepherd who coached the children over 3 weeks leading up to the challenge). The team won with 22 shots up while the runners-up with 14 shots up were another Year 5 team named “Sassy Sorrento”.
Teams from Sorrento Primary, St. Josephs Primary, Sorrento and Rosebud Primary schools took part and played in teams of four over 14 ends. A supportive crowd of teachers and parents from participating schools came along to watch the challenge which was supervised by a team of ten Sorrento Bowls Club members measuring and scoring the matches and an official umpire for the day, Graham Woodrow of Rye. Trophies were awarded to the two winning teams and certificates to all participating schools by Sorrento Bowls Club President, Rod Bell. It has set the challenge for an ongoing event on an annual basis at Sorrento Bowls Club working closely with the P.E. teachers at local schools.
Our thanks to Judith Mordech from Sorrento BC for providing this feedback.

Bowlers Arm News
Arm Bowling Goes Interclub
Arm Bowling has its first interclub event! Two clubs from the Peninsula Casey Region, Dromana BC and Frankston City BC have set the date for the first official inter-club arm bowling event staged in Victoria and we believe possibly in Australia. The venue will be Dromana BC and the date for the event is Sunday 8 November 2015. This could be the start of something big according to BV Director and State Arm Coordinator Phil Gude who stated, ‘It is my hope that other clubs will conduct similar events even if several clubs combine to get sufficient players that would be great. There are over 4,000 registered arm players in Victoria so little wonder this development has occurred and we pay great tribute to the two Clubs and officials who have made this happen”, he said. Phil went on to state, “Bowls Victoria challenges our Regions to help develop similar interclub arm events, and if enough respond we will develop an annual Regional Arm Bowling Contest. If you like a mini version of the three day National Championship of which Victoria are the current Champions.

BV Chief Executive Graeme Bridge has stated that, “Arm bowling is moving forward and represents a great membership enhancement for clubs as many players who would be lost to our sport can retain a competitive edge and take part in social bowls, Pennant and a National event series. Clubs should not lose site of the membership income these 4,000 plus players generate in Club membership, green fees, bar, raffle and other club events,” he said.

Club Information Returns
We want to remind everyone that in order for Bowls Victoria to produce its Annual Information Guide and to ensure all our information is up-to-date we request that all clubs please take a small amount of time to fill in the online form listing office holders and information about their club.In excess of 200 Clubs have now provided updated information to Bowls Victoria, so that still leaves quite a few needing to please address this request. We appreciate that many clubs are efficient and inform us of their up-to-date information but ask that they please still fill in this form as it allows us to collate the relevant information in an efficient way. Please ensure if your club has not already submitted this information to do so as soon as possible to ensure that the Information Guide does not go to print with old information which we suspect will not be appreciated by outgoing office holders. The link to the survey is here – please fill it in as soon as possible and thanks for your assistance.

If there’s a specific item that you want to submit, send it in via email to bowlsvic@bowlsvic.org.au and where possible we’ll include it in upcoming editions of the Bulletin.
